چکیده

We introduce a new design for visualizing high dimensional data. Points in high dimensional space are often illustrated through 2D or 3D embeddings, which are often cluttered and may-be unaccessible to non-scientific audience. In our design, instead of representing data points as 2D/3D vectors, each data point is represented by a smoothly varying function of time. These smooth functions are used to control the luminance of iconic representations of the data points, where the value of each such function determines the luminance of one icon that is associated with the underlying data point. The resulting display has a high capacity and is intuitively clear to the viewer. Perceptually, it is based on a fundamental psychophysical principle, namely the Gestalt law of Common Fate. Algorithmically, we present two methods designed to meet the demands of the visualization: a new non-negative matrix factorization method, and a partition-based grid embedding technique.

Generalized common fate: grouping by common luminance changes.

A critical step toward object recognition is the segmentation of a scene into relevant regions. One of the most important cues for segmentation is that of common fate: Elements that move together are grouped together Here we describe a new instantiation of common fate, in which elements move together not through physical space, but through luminance space. Experiment I shows that when elements ...

Depth effect on lightness revisited: The role of articulation, proximity and fields of illumination

The coplanar ratio principle proposes that when the luminance range in an image is larger than the canonical reflectance range of 30:1, the lightness of a target surface depends on the luminance ratio between that target and its adjacent coplanar neighbor (Gilchrist, 1980). This conclusion is based on experiments in which changes in the perceived target depth produced large changes in its perce...

Interindividual-Intergroup Discontinuity in the Prisoner’s Dilemma Game: How Common Fate, Proximity, and Similarity Affect Intergroup Competition

In two experiments with the PDG we manipulated the Campbell (1958), or Wertheimer (1923), indices of entitativity (common fate, proximity, and similarity) to examine when a set of individuals interacts with another set of individuals in the competitive manner that is characteristic of group-on-group interactions. Experiment 1 found that interactions between two 3-person sets were more competiti...

Analysis of Color Visualization in High Dynamic Range Image

Tone mapping of high dynamic range (HDR) images for realistic display is a commonly studied. However, scientific visualization of HDR image for analysis of scene luminance has much less attention. In this paper, we have presented and implemented a simple approach for the reproduction and visualization of the color information in HDR images. We attempt several simple color visualizing functions,...

Come Together, Right Now: Dynamic Overwriting of an Object's History through Common Fate

The objects around us constantly move and interact, and the perceptual system needs to monitor on-line these interactions and to update the object's status accordingly. Gestalt grouping principles, such as proximity and common fate, play a fundamental role in how we perceive and group these objects. Here, we investigated situations in which the initial object representation as a separate item w...
